Illuminate! Science East launches new season of award-winning program in New Brunswick

Science East Science Centre is pleased to announce this year’s dates and locations for its award-winning program, Illuminate! Shedding Light on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)!

Each year, Science East educators visit a dozen different schools around the province with hands-on workshops for students on different STEM-related topics. These workshops are capped off by a community night, showcasing different businesses and professionals in the area and how they use STEM.

“A lot of students struggle to make connections between what they learn in school and the careers they’re interested in,” says Illuminate! program coordinator Kayoe Stewart. “Through Illuminate!, we shed light on the variety of careers that require science or math – everything from art and medicine, to computer programming and mechanics. It’s a way to show students and their families what career options are possible with STEM, and help them learn about the courses that are necessary to get there.”

This year’s Illuminate! program will kick off in Nackawic on Oct 27, with seven more schools to follow before mid-December. Additional schools and dates will be added in the New Year.

“We invite local businesses who use STEM to set up interactive displays,” says Illuminate! community night coordinator, Angela Chang. “It’s an opportunity for students to meet people in their own communities who are using STEM every day, and it’s a chance to celebrate and promote the work being done, right here in New Brunswick.

In 2014, Illuminate! received the Best Outreach Program in Canada award from the Canadian Association of Science Centres.

Illuminate! community nights are free and open to the public, and will feature hands-on activities and displays for all ages.
